A review: “Truman´s spotless mind”

Last week Katie was given a SUPERB piece of homework by one of her C1 students: A review concerning two of Jim Carrey´s most famous films.

We couldn´t pass up on the chance to show you all how marvellous it really is, have a read for yourself!

Most of Jim Carrey´s films are known for their hilarity and dumb humour. Nevertheless, his acting talent lies in his ability to adapt to different roles, such as in “The Truman Show” and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind”. In the first, a satirical science fiction film, Carrey stars as Truman Burbank, adopted and raised by a corporation inside a stimulated television show revolving around his life, until he discovers this and tries to escape. The second, is a romantic science fiction film which follows an estranged couple (Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet) who have erased each other from their memories, then, start dating again.

Both films lack linear story telling. While The Truman Show´s major trouble in its understanding lies in the existence of two different points of view (Truman´s and the corporation´s), in the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind the storyline has been twisted and distorted, causing a maze of flashbacks and different character´s viewpoints.

Talking about each film´s characters, they both share the same objective: to influence the main character´s perception of reality and changes in his life. Overall, both films are a treat for the senses due to their well-directed motion and screenplay, as well as their different atmosphere and Carrey´s performance.

To finish with, although there´s no accounting for taste in reference to films and their various genres, The Truman Show´s popularity is due to its simplicity and funny way of telling a symbolic story, about a person, like us, who thought that everything he saw was in fact reality. Therefore, this film is more comfortable to watch rather than Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind´s rambling love story.

We hope you have enjoyed reading it!
